Anthony Gordon is undoubtedly one of Newcastle United’s players of the season.

The 23-year-old has been absolutely spectacular in black and white, and sits alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak in the conversation for Newcastle United’s best player this year.

It has been a remarkable campaign for Anthony Gordon – the best of his young career. He has taken his game to a completely new level, and proved a lot of people wrong along the way.

After a slow start last season, Gordon has burst into life as a Newcastle United player. He is someone who Eddie Howe can trust, while he has became decisive in the final third.

Gordon has been so consistent in the Premier League, while he has also proven to be a difference maker. The numbers prove that, with the winger boasting 10 goals and 10 assists in the league.

Premier League snub Anthony Gordon

He has been absolutely outstanding, and probably will win the honour of being named Newcastle United’s player of the season.

However, Gordon has not received any Premier League recognition.

The nominations for Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season have been revealed, and Gordon does not feature in either list.

Interestingly, Isak does. He has been nominated for both awards, after scoring 20 Premier League goals. That is the third highest in the league, with only Cole Palmer and Erling Haaland ahead of him.

Henry Winter questions why Anthony Gordon was not nominated

When it comes to the Young Player of the Season award, it is a surprise to see Gordon be snubbed.

That is also the view of journalist Henry Winter, who has taken to X to query why the Newcastle winger was not nominated.

He wrote: “Very surprising that Anthony Gordon is not amongst the 8 nominees for @premierleague Young POTY. 10 goals, 10 assists, thrilling to watch, versatile, scares defenders, good chance of #ENG squad. Fantastic season. Mainoo/Udogie have had good seasons but better than Gordon’s?”

It is a farcical Premier League award anyway

The Young Player of the Year award is a bit of a farce anyway. Out of the players nominated, Cole Palmer, Destiny Udogie and Kobbie Mainoo are the only rookies who should really be in contention.

For instance, Isak is 24-years-old. Other nominees include Phil Foden, who made his Premier League debut back in 2017, and Bukayo Saka, whose Premier League debut was on January 1st 2019.

Players like that should not be included – but if they are then how on earth has Gordon missed out?!

It seems like an extremely harsh decision, but one that likely will not upset Gordon too much. He will be just focussed on his own game and helping Newcastle United qualify for Europe. After that, his attention will hopefully turn towards England and Euro 2024.
