Dan Burn reveals Newcastle’s big aim for next season and it’s incredibly ambitious

There is still a lot for Newcastle United to play for this season, but Dan Burn is already looking ahead to next year.

The Magpies are still in the fight for Europe, and certainly helped their position with a 5-1 win over Sheffield United on Saturday. It was an important win for Newcastle United, who were well below par for a large portion of the game.

But Eddie Howe‘s side got over the line in emphatic fashion, and probably could have scored more against a side who will now be in the Championship next season.

For Newcastle, they are hoping to be in the Europa League or the Europa Conference League. That will depend on where they finish in the Premier League, and who wins the FA Cup. Hopefully it is Manchester City, as that would mean finishing sixth puts us into the Europa League.

Some Newcastle fans would rather play in the Europa Conference League

However, some fans would rather be in the Conference League. While it will not include as many high calibre opponents, it will give the Magpies a great chance at winning some silverware.

West Ham United went the distance and won it last season, while Aston Villa are currently trying do the same. They have made it to the semi-finals, where they will face Olympiacos.

Unai Emery’s side are the favourites to go all the way, as they go in search of their first trophy since 1996. They won the League Cup that year, beating Leeds United in the final.

Newcastle have not won a trophy since 1969

For Newcastle United, their trophy drought is much longer. They have not lifted silverware since 1969, when Joe Harvey manged the Magpies to Inter-Cities Fairs Cup glory. Before that, their last domestic honour was 1955 when they won the FA Cup.

That is something that Newcastle are desperately trying to change right now, and they came close last season by reaching the Carabao Cup final. Sadly, Eddie Howe’s side lost 2-0 to Manchester United at Wembley.

The 2023/24 campaign will also end with Newcastle not winning silverware, with both domestic cup journeys ending at the quarter final stage.

Dan Burn outlines his Newcastle United ambition for 2024/25

The wait for a trophy goes on, and that is something that Dan Burn has told the Athletic that he is desperate to end as soon as possible.

“You’ve got to show that you’re still ambitious,” he said.

“It was easy to show last season, with all the hype that was around. The best teams can do that season after season, so it’s about us being able to do that. I still think we can have a positive end to the season. The challenge next year is we’ve got to go again. We’ve got to win something.

“Yeah, we’ve got to. For me. Obviously, that’s just personally, but I just think with the squad we’ve got and the momentum we’ve got as a club, that’s got to be our aim, to come away with silverware.”

This Newcastle team will be immortalised if they win something

Burn has made it clear what he thinks Newcastle United must do next season. It does not matter which competition it is – he is adamant that the Magpies must go the distance in something and win a trophy.

That would turn this Newcastle team into legends, and it would be amazing to see this group of players be the ones to go the distance and end the club’s trophy drought.

That is going to be the aim next season, while internally the club will also want to challenge for a place in the Champions League yet again. It was an incredible experience being involved this season, and hopefully we do not have to wait as long as 20 years to return.

But if it was a choice between a trophy and Champions League qualification, the answer has to be silverware!
