Chelsea want to sign ‘very special’ defender, he’s been in the Team of the Year four seasons in a row

Reports have stated that Chelsea are keen on strengthening their backline with the signing of one top player.

Defence is a position that is set to undergo plenty of changes this summer, with Thiago Silva already confirmed to be on the move back to Brazil.

Despite his strong performances lately, Trevoh Chalobah has been reported to still be potentially surplus to requirements due to the need to balance the books at the club.

Another player who has upped his game in recent weeks to the success of the Blues is Marc Cucurella. Teammate Benoit Badiashile recently stated he is key to their improvements on the pitch.

However, talk has not gone away that he could be on the move this summer too, meaning they will likely be on the lookout for a new left-back.

As far as players go who have made their name in that role, they don’t come more impressive than Theo Hernandez and what he has done in recent campaigns.

Chelsea want Theo Hernandez

The Frenchman has been named in the Serie A team of the year for the past four consecutive seasons, with his performances certainly keeping him in the conversation to make it five on the spin this year.

AC Milan chief and club legend Paolo Maldini has been a figure who went public with his praise for Hernandez, describing him as ‘very special’.

Cucurella impressing at left-back

Now, a report from Mundo Deportivo suggests the Blues are one of the sides interested in a deal this summer, although will face competition.

It goes on to say that Bayern Munich are at this stage the favourites to complete a deal, as they prepare for their Champions League semi-final under Thomas Tuchel tonight.

There will certainly be Chelsea fans monitoring the performance of Cucurella for the rest of the campaign though and wondering if there is not a future for him at the club after his turn of fortunes recently.
