The Euro 2024 semi-final on Wednesday will determine which Liverpool players will be involved in the final on Sunday. With England facing Netherlands, the Reds are guaranteed to have two or three representatives at the showpiece occasion.
We will have to wait and see if its Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez who make it to Berlin, or Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk who get through to the final. But the European Championship isn’t the only show in town, with Reds players competing in the Copa America too.
The second semi-final of that competition takes place later today and will see Luis Díaz’ Colombia take on Darwin Núñez’ Uruguay. Whoever gets through will find Alexis Mac Allister waiting for them in the final, after Argentina beat Canada 2-0 on Tuesday. The Liverpool midfielder’s physique has been impressing fans as much as his sublime passing.
Mac Allister made his fourth start of the tournament against Canada. He lasted 78 minutes before being replaced by Ezequiel Palacios. Having been rested for the final Group Stage game, it’s safe to assume the 25-year-old will be in Lionel Scaloni’s starting XI for the final.
Argentina is the defending Copa America champion but Mac Allister was not part of the squad three years ago. Even so, he can hold realistic hopes of adding his name to the list of his 21 countryman who have won both this competition and the World Cup, after winning the big one in Qatar in 2022. Few of those players will have been in as good shape as Mac Allister, who showed off his muscular legs in training recently.
The image was shared to the Liverpool sub on Reddit and attracted over 1,200 likes. The comments showed that Reds supporters enjoyed what they saw.
“Built like a Street Fighter 6 character,” offered didamangi83, while Radiofled made reference to Mac Allister’s heritage by joking: “Look at those beautiful Scottish muscles”. A few fans also drew comparisons with Xherdan Shaqiri, who was affectionately known as the ‘Power Cube’ during his time with Liverpool.
Reimiro offered praise, writing: “He is the perfect footballer. It’s why Klopp fell in love with him. One of the best professionals in the game with intense dedication.”
GrillNoob added: “And there was me feeling good after doing leg day in the gym... Now I feel like I have noodle legs. Good lord.” We hear you, GrillNoob, we hear you.
Liverpool.com says: It's great to see Mac Allister in tip top condition. His pre-season for 2024/25 is going to be short, so it's vital he returns from the Copa America fit and ready to continue into the new campaign.
