Newcastle United will be eager to bolster their ranks in the summer transfer window in a bid to kick on from a mixed 2023/24 campaign.

The Magpies have found form at just the right time and will now fancy their chances of beating out-of-form Tottenham for fifth place.

Newcastle’s squad was pushed to its limits this season and, with the Magpies likely to be in European competition once again, they’ll need to increase their strength in depth.

One area the Magpies hierarchy and coaches will need to look at is in goal. Martin Dubravka is being linked with a move away and Loris Karius’ contract expires in June.

Now, a report from the Evening Standard has claimed that Newcastle are frontrunners for a goalkeeper deemed the world’s most valuable stopper last year.

The player in question is Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who has endured a difficult season after losing his place to David Raya in between the Gunners sticks.

The Standard, reporting on the Gunners’ goalkeeping situation, claimed that the Magpies currently lead the race for the 25-year-old, who is expected to leave in search of first-team football.

Newcastle will fancy their chances of signing Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal

Ramsdale is a superb goalkeeper whose fall down the Arsenal pecking order continues to be the subject of much debate for fans and neutrals.

Last year, the CIES Football Observatory listed the England international in first place in their list of the world’s most expensive goalkeepers, as per their statistical model.

Newcastle will certainly fancy their chances of signing Ramsdale, as they’ve managed to break into the top six and will hopefully seal Europa League football for next season.

Obviously much depends on whether the Magpies cash in on Dubravka this season, as Ramsdale will not want to move clubs only to still be second-choice.

If Newcastle do sell the Slovakia international, then they’ll be able to offer regular first-team football to the Arsenal man.

Who knows, he could end up becoming yet another goalkeeper the Gunners will regret selling. Emiliano Martinez has certainly done well for himself since leaving north London.
