Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed what he changed last summer following a difficult season. The England international explained he had to make the alterations after claiming he didn't want to go 'through that again' in terms of the disappointing 2022/23 campaign.

The Reds fell to fifth place in the top flight of English football and narrowly missed out on Champions League football to Newcastle United, limiting Jürgen Klopp's side to a spot in the Europa League, which he claimed would be made 'our competition' ahead of this season. As well as dropping down the table, Liverpool also went without a trophy across all other competitions.

It was a disappointing season for everyone associated with the club, with the performances of key players such as Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah under constant scrutiny throughout the campaign. Although Alexander-Arnold recorded four goals and 10 assists across his 47 appearances in all competitions, he was far from impressed with his contributions to the team.

Speaking to former Manchester United star Gary Neville on The Overlap, the 25-year-old spoke about what he changed last summer to ensure he improved in the 2023/24 campaign. "Last season was a season where I thought to myself, I'm not going through that again," he said.

"I should be able to control whether or not I have a good season and if I'm happy with how I play. People might say I've had a bad game but I'll come home and say 'You know what, I've done my job', I might not have got assists or whatever but I was solid defensively.

"As long as I can say in myself that the season has gone well. I didn't want to waste another season."

Neville went on to ask what went wrong during last season, where the Liverpool vice-captain added: "It was just, as a whole, we went through a rough season. When people have such high expectations of you individually and as a team, it's hard to keep living up to it. It's the hardest demand ever.

"At the end of that season, I just thought I'm not going through that again. I didn't want to feel the way I felt at times. I want to be winning minimum one trophy a season."

Asked who he confided in after the difficult campaign, Alexander-Arnold added: "A lot of it was with the manager, the coaching staff, and my family. It wasn’t like I was in a really dark place, I just wasn’t happy with how I was playing and when that’s the biggest thing in your life, it does get on top of you.

“100 per cent [feel it more because I’m a local lad], it’s like you're engulfed in it, that you’re in the center and everything is surrounding you, it's intense. You love it because it makes it feel even more special when things are going well, but you also have the sense of your letting everyone down when you’re not performing, which is difficult.

“It’s important for players to go through this because once you come out of it, and how I feel now, whatever I go through from now until the end of my career, I’ll be able to handle it, whether good or bad I’ll have the right mentality.”

Liverpool.com says: While he hasn't met the same numbers as last season and has struggled with injuries which have limited him to just 19 starts in the Premier League so far, the improvements made have been clear to see regarding the upshift in form for the club as a whole. Liverpool is once again competing with the very best and regardless of whether or not any more trophies are secured, it's a season they can be proud of to mark Klopp's exit in style.
