Harry Kane sets Champions League task to Postecoglou amid ex-Tottenham star's Arsenal message

Latest Tottenham news with Harry Kane and Bayern Munich significant impacting Ange Postecoglou's Champions League hopes

Harry Kane of Bayern Muenchen celebrate with the fans after their sides victory the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg match between FC Bayern München and Arsenal FC at Allianz Arena on April 17, 2024 in Munich, Germany.
Former Tottenham striker Harry Kane helped Bayern Munich knock Arsenal out of the Champions League

Harry Kane will have both pleased and angered Tottenham supporters following Bayern Munich's Champions League win against Arsenal. The former Spurs striker endured a quiet evening at Allianz Arena but Joshua Kimmich was on hand to score the only goal of the second leg, meaning the Bavarians won the quarter-final tie 3-2 on aggregate.

When the draw was made, both Tottenham were excited by the prospect of Kane either knocking out the bitter rivals of his former club. However equally, Arsenal fans were hopeful they could bring Kane's first season to a nightmarish close after they lost the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen.

In the end, Tottenham and Kane will have felt they got the last laugh especially with Arsenal's Premier League title hopes dwindling. However, the 30-year-old removed any idea that he holds any discontent towards the Gunners despite being the top scorer in North London Derby history.

"I think for me personally it’s something that’s built up more from the outside," he admitted ahead of the game in a press conference. "I had a lot of history with Arsenal playing with Spurs and the North London Derby was the biggest game of the Premier League season.

"I have a different team here and my focus is on beating Arsenal. I’m sure a lot Spurs fans will be wanting us beat Arsenal tomorrow but I just have to focus on beating the team in front of me." Following the win, Kane made an honest admission of the tie against Arsenal before moving onto the prospect of facing Real Madrid

"Semi-final here we come," he said via the Champions League's official Instagram page. "Tough game today but we found a way. Stuck together and that's what we need going forward. Real Madrid in the semi-final going to be another tough game but let's bring it on. Two big teams. Thank you for all your support and the amazing home atmosphere. We're going to need more.

"First leg here at the Allianz - let's get off to a good start but for now enjoy this in your homes or go out and celebrate and we look forward to the semi-final." In the short-term, all associated with Tottenham will be delighted that Kane helped Arsenal's European dreams end, however it could greatly affect his former club next season.

With Arsenal being eliminated, along with holders Manchester City, England's UEFA coefficient standing has taken a significant hit. Two of the spots in next season's revamped Champions League are set to be handed to the countries with the highest UEFA coefficient ranking, which is determined by their clubs' performance in Europe this season.

As things currently stand, the spots will go to Italy and Germany with the two nations on 18.428 and 17.642 points, respectively. England meanwhile sit on 16.785 points and their slim hopes now rely on Aston Villa, Liverpool and West Ham with the latter two behind in their quarter-final ties against Italian outfit Atalanta and newly-crowned German champions Bayer Leverkusen.

Both of those teams being knocked, by sides from Italy and Germany, will confirm that England won't be awarded a fifth qualification spot which will mean Tottenham have to finish in the top four to qualify for next season's competition. Aston Villa currently sit three points above Spurs in fourth although Ange Postecoglou's side have a game in hand on their rivals.

By the end of Thursday, Villa could be the only team remaining in Europe with their 2-1 quarter-final first leg victory against Lille putting them in pole position to qualify for the Europa Conference League semi-finals.
