Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has changed his stance when discussing his future beyond this season. The Netherlands international was previously reluctant to comment on what the future may hold but has now revealed he wants to be part of the 'transition' period at Anfield.

Van Dijk, 32, will be entering the final year of his deal at the Reds this summer and it is currently unclear as to whether or not he will extend his stay. Teammate Mohamed Salah is in a similar position with his deal also set to expire in 2025, amid continued links over a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Despite his age, Van Dijk is still performing at an elite level. The defender has been nominated for the Premier League Player of the Season, having to the third-best defense in the league.

While nothing has been confirmed regarding his future, there has been a clear shift in his tone. Speaking on his situation back in January when asked about having just 18 months left on his contract, Van Dijk said: "Listen, I don’t know. The club will have a big job on their hands, that is well known. To replace the manager and replace not only the manager, the staff is leaving, and there are so many things that will change.

“So the club has a big job on its hands and I am very curious which direction that will go in. But when that will be announced we will see our situation, I can’t say now.”

However, the Liverpool captain is seemingly leaning towards staying at the club ahead of Arne Slot's arrival this summer, after speaking more openly about being part of the new era at Anfield in recent weeks. "There is nothing for me to discuss because there is no news," the 32-year-old told TNT Sports.

"I think the club is very much busy with who is going to be the new manager and that is the main focus. I am very happy here, I love the club and you can see that as well. It’s a big part of my life already.

"The focus is now on the last two games and then the club will focus on who the new manager is. There will be a big transition and I am part of that. There will be a lot of changes happening and, I wouldn't say scary is the right word, but it is quite interesting and exciting what will happen now."

Liverpool.com says: Van Dijk may be approaching the twilight of his career but has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League once again this season. Liverpool is expected to sign at least one reinforcement in his position but they will have a long way to go to push him out the team. The imminent arrival of countryman Arne Slot will reinforce his importance.
