Champions League semi-finalist now the ‘frontrunner’ to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

Just 24 hours after the 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace, Manchester United fans saw two former players reach the Champions League final on Tuesday night.

As if United’s season needed another kick in the stomach, Borussia Dortmund’s win at Paris Saint-Germain provided it.

Dortmund’s 1-0 victory in Paris sends them through to the Champions League final with a 2-0 aggregate scoreline.

Marcel Sabitzer – whose loan spell at United ended rather quietly last summer – started in midfield whilst Jadon Sancho continued his revival.

Sancho was an outcast at United for the first half of the season but now finds himself in the Champions League; it has been that kind of season for United.

In the other semi-final, Bayern Munich head to the Spanish capital to take on Real Madrid with the game finely-poised after a 2-2 draw in the first leg.

United won’t have Champions League football to look forward to next season, but Ineos will have one eye on that clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Thomas Tuchel to Manchester United latest

Monday’s 4-0 hammering at Crystal Palace only turned up the heat on Erik ten Hag and we are now seeing more and more rumours surrounding a potential managerial change at Old Trafford.

Ineos will not accept such defeats, even in the midst of an unprecedented defensive injury crisis, and Ten Hag is in a real fight for his United future.

iNews now claim that one man is emerging as the favourite to replace Ten Hag this summer – Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel leads his Bayern side into battle against Real tonight, targeting a third Champions League final appearance in the last five seasons.

That record is simply astonishing and whilst Tuchel’s time at Bayern hasn’t exactly gone to plan, missing out on the Bundesliga title, his European success cannot be ignored.

It’s stated that senior figures inside Ineos now view Tuchel as the ‘leading candidate’ to become the new United boss if Ten Hag is axed.

Tuchel is the United ‘frontrunner’ and is thought to be keen on a return to England having been sacked by Chelsea in 2022.

Bayern have already announced that Tuchel will be leaving the club this summer and that may just allow Ineos to try and tee up a move – but that may only come into focus after Bayern’s Champions League fate is known.

Tuchel’s previous Premier League experience and his numerous years of coaching at the top of the European game will make hims very appealing to Ineos.

The German is a big name and Ineos are seemingly viewing him as a frontrunner – but only they know if they really plan to move on from Ten Hag or not.

Ruben Amorim still in the mix

The report notes that Sporting boss Ruben Amorim may not be out of the running just yet.

Amorim has been mentioned for the United job in the past but seemingly ruled himself out in recent days.

“I’m staying at Sporting,” said Amorim. “I’m under contract and it’s a special moment for me, for the club. Now we will try to win the third title together. Let’s try to make it happen,” he added.

That seemed like Amorim committing his future to Sporting but iNews claim that those comments should be treated with caution.

A Portuguese source allegedly believes that Amorim is trying to smooth over his relationship with angry Sporting fans after he travelled for talks with West Ham United.

United moving for Amorim may be viewed as too big for him to turn down, but his comments allow for an extended stay if no offer arrives.

Amorim has just clinched a second league title as Sporting boss and his reputation as one of the top young managers in the game is certainly exciting.

The 39-year-old seems to be behind Tuchel in the Ineos plans but is worth keeping an eye on, just in case he can actually be lured away from Sporting after all.
