Stuart Attwell has been handed a crucial role for a Champions League semi-final clash just days after his VAR controversy.

The referee, 41, was on VAR duty at Stockley Park when Nottingham Forest suffered a 2-0 defeat at Everton on April 21. The match itself was shrouded in controversy, with the away side left furious at three penalty calls going against them.

Forest issued a scathing statement post-match expressing their previous concerns over Attwell’s alleged support for relegation rivals Luton. The Premier League strugglers doubled down on their stunning reaction by demanding the PGMOL release audio recordings of Attwell and matchday referee Anthony Taylor’s conversation during the incidents.

But both Taylor and Attwell have seemingly been rewarded by with selection for Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain’s blockbuster Champions League first-leg tie this week (May 1), live on TNT Sports. Taylor will act as referee while Attwell returns to his VAR role at the Westfalenstadion, otherwise known as Signal Iduna Park.

He will be supported by fellow Premier League official David Coote acting as Assistant Video Assistant Referee (AVAR), while Englishmen Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will run the line.

The high pressure fixture follows another contentious display by Attwell, this time as the on-field referee, for Wolves vs Bournemouth last week. Several of his first-half decisions had infuriated the home fans.

Wolves then thought they had equalised thanks to Hwang Hee-chan's power header, only for Attwell to be advised to check the pitchside monitor for a possible foul. His call to rule out the goal sparked another wave of fury among the Molineux faithful.

Meanwhile, Taylor’s last high-profile European game in charge - a Europa League final clash between Roma and Sevilla - ended in even greater outrage.

Jose Mourinho abused the Englishman in the car park after the game, while Roma fans angrily confronted the referee on his way home at the airport.

Mourinho was slapped with a four-match ban for alleged foul-language after Taylor failed to award Roma a penalty for a handball. He also gave Sevilla a penalty which was overturned by VAR.
