Manchester City and Arsenal can reportedly trigger Bruno Guimaraes’s £100million release clause in five weeks’ time. The Newcastle midfielder has been linked with a blockbuster summer exit with Paris Saint-Germain also interested.

Newcastle may need to sell a star player at the end of the season to remain within profit and sustainability regulations. Brazilian star Guimaraes is one of the club’s most valuable assets.

The 26-year-old has earned rave reviews since joining from Lyon in January 2022. He was the first marquee signing of the Saudi-led era at St. James’ Park.

Guimaraes is expected to attract interest in the summer transfer window but will not come at a bargain price. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the £100m release clause becomes active in the final week of May.

The clause will then reportedly remain active for the whole of June so interested clubs will have just over four weeks to get a deal done. Newcastle will have total control over Guimaraes’s future after that period with the release clause no longer active from July onwards.

Guimaraes has a Newcastle contract until 2028, giving Newcastle plenty of power during any negotiations with interested clubs. Man City and Arsenal are reported to harbour an interest alongside French champions PSG.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is desperate to keep Guimaraes but accepts that it will be a difficult task, particularly with the Magpies potentially needing to sanction a sale. Howe said earlier this month: “Players like Bruno, they are not around every corner. They are very rare. Bruno should be appreciated for everything he brings.

“My intention would be to keep Bruno at the club for as long as we possibly can. I can never make guarantees though, that would be absolutely foolish of me. We have been in football long enough to know you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. He is an integral part of the team and playing very well.”

Howe reiterated that stance before Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace and referenced Guimaraes’s improved discipline. The player has remarkably avoided a two-match ban despite sitting on nine yellow cards for seven games: “He is always setting new goals for himself. Bruno is very motivated to help the team.

“His form has been very good and the yellow card situation he found himself in, refocused his game. It was a healthy thing.”
