Erling Haaland showed his class after Manchester City were knocked out of the Champions League on penalties by Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

The two played out a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, meaning the tie finished with an aggregate score of 4-4 and went to penalties.

Real beat the current holders 4-3 on spot-kicks following costly misses from both Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic in quick succession.

Antonio Rudiger bagged the winner to set up a semi-final showdown with Bayern Munich.

City were denied the chance to win a domestic treble for the second year running and midfielder Silva was blamed for the loss after a poor penalty down the middle was easily saved by Andriy Lunin.

He had the chance to put City 2-1 up on spot-kicks after Ederson denied Luka Modric.

The Portugal international was visibly gutted and the cameras were focused on Silva as he exited the pitch after Rudiger's winning penalty.

But Haaland stepped in and footage from the stands picked him pushing the camera away and shielded his colleague from the spotlight.

The Norwegian then led Silva away towards the tunnel, earning praise for his gesture.

One fan wrote: "This is Manchester City. This is the team we love. Bravo, Haaland."

A second said: "This is being a good mate!"

A third added: "What a man. These players have become more than colleague."

Another user commented: "Win together, lose together."

A final person stated: "This is what a team is about."

Haaland failed to score in either leg against Real Madrid and according to Pep Guardiola, he, Kevin De Bruyne and Manuel Akanji asked to be substituted as "they could not continue".
