For the first time since the 2019/20 season, there will be no English involvement in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Defending champions Manchester City and fellow Premier League side Arsenal were both eliminated from the competition on Wednesday night to leave England without a representative in the competition.

City were beaten on penalties by 14-time winners Real Madrid after their quarter-final tie ended 4-4 following extra-time.

Meanwhile, Arsenal were beaten 1-0 away from home by Bayern Munich to lose 3-2 on aggregate to the Bundesliga side.

Both Arsenal and City had gone into their quarter-final ties as favourites but failed to live up to expectations.

Madrid will now face Bayern in their semi-final, with PSG taking on Borussia Dortmund on the other side of the draw.

Back in January, Cristiano Ronaldo picked three teams that he thought were most likely to reach the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1.

But one of those clubs has now been eliminated from the competition.

He said Manchester City had a "good chance" of winning consecutive titles, while also naming Real Madrid and Bayern Munich as the other favourites.

"I think Manchester City has a great chance of winning the Champions League again this season," he added.

"I hope not [they don’t win], but I think they have a chance."

Ronaldo won the Champions League four times during his time at Real Madrid after previously winning with Manchester United.

And he will be hoping his former club go all the way again this season.

Speaking after their penalty shootout defeat, City manager Pep Guardiola said he had "no regrets" about his side's performance against the undisputed kings of Europe.

"Congratulations to Real Madrid - they defended so deep with incredible solidarity," Guardiola said.

"We did everything. I don’t have any regrets about what we have done.

"Always as managers we try to create more and concede less in every single game because that helps to win. We did everything, defensively and offensively.

"They made a good goal. There were two, three, four transitions but it is normal at that level with the quality they have. We played exceptionally in all departments. Unfortunately, we could not win. It is what it is."
