The 28-year-old was taken off during the Buccaneers' 4-0 Premier Soccer League victory against Thwihli Thwahla on Sunday afternoon.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Lebitso has showcased excellent form for Pirates since joining from Chippa United in the January transfer window.
Despite making significant strides under the tutelage of Jose Riveiro, the player encountered a setback during their PSL match against Royal AM at Harry Gwala Stadium.
Pirates have subsequently provided additional details regarding Lebitso's injury.
WHAT PIRATES SAID?
“The game between Orlando Pirates and Royal AM has brought mixed news,” the statement read on the club’s website.
“Just as Orlando Pirates celebrated a commanding 4-0 victory over Royal AM in an all-important DStv Premiership on Sunday afternoon, the Buccaneers have suffered a significant setback with the injury to Thabiso Lebitso.
“The Bucs medical team has revealed to Orlandopiratesfc.com that the 28-year-old right-back has suffered a broken collarbone, which requires surgical intervention. The prognosis of how long Lebitso will be out for will be known post his procedure,” the statement ended.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Lebitso rose to prominence for the Buccaneers with a spectacular long-range goal against rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a thrilling five-goal league encounter back in March 2024.
This impressive performance elevated Lebitso's status, leading to consistent playing time for Pirates. However, with his recent injury, only time will reveal the duration of his absence from action.
WHAT NEXT FOR PIRATES?
As Lebitso recuperates from his injury on the sidelines, the remainder of the team will focus on gearing up for their upcoming league clash against Cape Town City scheduled for Wednesday, May 1st.
Furthermore, they will be preparing for the Nedbank Cup semi-final against Chippa United slated for Saturday, May 4th.
