Harvey Elliott explains Liverpool goal celebration as he delivers on promise made 'months' ago

Harvey Elliott, Liverpool's number 19, will rarely score a better goal than he managed against Spurs. He has explained the goal celebration that he pulled out.

Liverpool attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott scored a screamer against Spurs.

Harvey Elliott is into double figures now for Liverpool when it comes to scoring goals. But he will not net many better than the one that found the top corner against Spurs earlier today.

As he came inside from the right wing onto his stronger left foot, Elliott couldn't have placed the ball any better had he tried. It pinged off his boot and beyond the Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who stood no chance.

He celebrated the goal with a hand gesture in which he crossed two fingers and covered his mouth. It let many wondering the reason behind it, and he was asked exactly that after the game.

"It was for my friend, really," Elliott said on Sky Sports. "I’ve been promising it for god knows how many months since I last scored, and today I finally got to do it."

Alexis Mac Allister might have a thing to say about the Liverpool Goal of the Season award but the Argentine has some competition. Jürgen Klopp, on the touchline for the penultimate time, was loving it.

"Did Harvey Elliott play enough this season? I'm not sure," Klopp admitted to Match of the Day. "That's up to me. It's a little bit of moments like this and he was outstanding — outstanding — and he has to be as dominant as he was today. Fantastic player; what a goal. I love it. All good. I will watch [his development from afar when I've left] definitely, and enjoy it."

With a new manager coming in this summer in Arne Slot, Elliott, like his teammates, will have to prove himself again when the pecking order is worked out. But there is no reason that the 20-year-old cannot continue to improve and progress.

Liverpool.com says: This was one of the best strikes of the season for any club, not just Liverpool. Elliott might not have played from the start as much as he might have liked this season, but he is still young enough to grow into the role even further. The next challenge is to score more regularly, even if he doesn't always find the top corner from range.

With performances like that, he must surely have secured his spot for the trip to Aston Villa a week tomorrow. That is the best way to nail down a place: ensure that it is impossible not to be selected. With a showing like this, with relentless pressing and perfect passing, he simply has to be in the side.
