Former Rangers goalkeeper ’emerges as shock Celtic transfer target’ as Brendan Rodgers plots Joe Hart replacement

CELTIC are reportedly interested in signing a former Rangers backup goalkeeper this summer.

Brendan Rodgers has already hinted that he will on the hunt for TWO new stoppers for next season with Joe Hart retiring at the end of the campaign and out-of-favour Benjamin Siegrist also expected to move on.

Several goalies have been linked with the Hoops in recent months, including Trabzonspor's Ugurcan Cakir, Werder Bremen's Michael Zetterer and Tom Glover of Middlesbrough to name a few.

But the latest name said to be on the Northern Irishman's shortlist is one that will likely come as a shock due to his previous links with their rivals across the city.

The Daily Mail claim Motherwell No1 and former Gers youth player Liam Kelly is being tracked by Celtic as a potential option to fill in for Hart and Siegrist if they both end up leaving this summer.

The Scotland international is out of contract at the end of the season, and the report suggests the Parkhead club may take advantage of the fact he will be available for free should he not agree new terms with the Fir Park side.

Kelly, 28, came through the youth ranks at Ibrox and spent over a decade as a youngster before finally parting ways in 2018 without making a single first team appearance.

He was on the cusp of the senior team in Govan but it never worked out for him and he joined Livingston permanently that year following an impressive loan spell during the 2016/17 season.

Kelly left Scotland in 2019 when QPR came calling but he quickly returned two years later to sign for Motherwell on loan in January 2021, before again sealing his permanent move there that summer.

That's where he has been ever since but his time at Fir Park is now coming to an end and he will likely depart at the end of the season.

The Hoops could face stiff competition for the talented shot-stopper though as it's believed he is also attracting interest from England too.

However, the report suggests Kelly is high up on the Hoops' shortlist due to the fact he would bolster the number of European players available for Europe.

Norwich City and Scotland No1 Angus Gunn has also been touted with a move to Parkhead this season but the Canaries will likely command a large fee for his signature.

Kelly is a player who is well-known to Celtic goalkeeper coach Stevie Woods from his time working in the Scotland set-up so the experienced mentor may have a say in the scouting process.

The 28-year-old has been capped once by Steve Clarke - in the friendly against France last October - and he is hoping to make the manager's 26-man squad for Euro 2024.
