Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Premier League took a massive blow on Sunday afternoon as they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace – as Jurgen Klopp’s men missed some golden chances.

The biggest of which was probably Curtis Jones going through on goal, only to skew an effort wide of Dean Henderson’s goal. The Palace goalkeeper, and the Eagles defence, were playing at their very best.

A block from Demetri Mitchell inside the six-yard box denied Mo Salah from a neat near-post finish, while Henderson somehow managed to spoon an acrobatic effort from Luis Diaz over the bar, in the first 45.

Uruguay star Darwin Nunez, who is renowned for suffering a rush of blood when it comes to his inability to convert chances – as recently said by Kolo Toure – had a great chance to score from a Liverpool corner.

Ian Wright cannot believe what Darwin Nunez did on Sunday

The ball dropping around six yards out, Nunez hammered the ball towards goal – without thought. The ball cannoned off Henderson and went out of play. A top save, but a wasted chance from Nunez, again.

It comes after missing a one-on-one chance against Atalanta on Thursday, too – when the scoreline read 0-0. Tim Sherwood says Nunez is simply not the answer for Liverpool, as he continues to miss chances.

Speaking on The Kelly And Wrighty Show, Ian Wright criticised Nunez. He said that it was “unforgivable” that Nunez chose to have a might whack at the ball – instead of placing a shot either side of Henderson.

“Unforgivable for a centre-forward to be that close, and hit the ball that hard instead of placing it and finding the spot. Yes [it’s like Chris Wood’s last week]. There’s a resignation to the fact that, oh I’ve scored.

“These are the moments you need to show composure, be calm in the box. There’s something happening there in regards to them and the ruthless nature they should have, but haven’t got,” Wright summarised.

What Chris Sutton and Jamie Carragher have said about Nunez

Sutton plucked a stat from nowhere this week that says Nunez has the worst conversion rate in Europe’s top-five leagues and to be playing up top for Liverpool, that isn’t good enough. Something must change.

Jamie Carragher simply said it was “not good enough” from the big striker. If Nunez is going to continue missing chances like these, as he has done throughout his whole Liverpool spell, then he will cost them.

He already has done this season. His missed chance against Atalanta might have changed the entire tie. Against Palace, he might have saved his side’s pursuit of a title. He has to work on it, or get replaced.
