As Reported By daily Express Hurley signed for Sunderland in 1957 and went on to make over 400 appearances for the club, becoming a stalwart of the team's defense. His imposing presence on the field, along with his leadership qualities, quickly endeared him to the Sunderland faithful, who affectionately nicknamed him "The King".

Hurley's impact on the club was so significant that he was named Sunderland's Player of the Year on three separate occasions, a testament to his consistency and quality as a player. He also captained the team for several seasons, guiding them to success in the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Off the field, Hurley was known for his humility and down-to-earth nature. Despite his status as a club legend, he always remained approachable and grounded, never letting his success go to his head. This endeared him even further to the fans, who saw him as a true Sunderland hero.

After retiring from playing, Hurley remained involved with the club in various capacities, including coaching and ambassadorial roles. He continued to support Sunderland through thick and thin, never wavering in his loyalty to the team that had given him so much.

Today's tribute to Hurley was organized by the club and the fans as a way to honor his contribution to Sunderland Football Club and to celebrate his legacy. It saw current and former players, as well as fans, gather at the Stadium of Light to share their memories of Hurley and to pay their respects to a true Sunderland icon.

Among those in attendance was former Sunderland manager, Peter Reid, who spoke fondly of Hurley's influence on the club during his time as a player. "Charlie was a fantastic player and a fantastic person," Reid said. "He was a true leader on the field and a real gentleman off it. He is a legend at this club and will always be remembered as one of the greatest to ever wear the red and white stripes."

The tribute also included a minute's silence in memory of Hurley, as well as a presentation of a commemorative plaque to his family in recognition of his services to the club. Fans were also encouraged to share their own memories of Hurley on social media using the hashtag #CharlieHurleyDay.

As the tribute came to a close, there was a sense of gratitude and pride among the Sunderland faithful, who had come together to celebrate the life and career of one of their greatest ever players. Charlie Hurley may no longer be with us, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of the Sunderland fans forever.
