Why the referee is wearing a camera in the Manchester United vs Crystal Palace clash

Manchester United take on Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Monday night.

Manchester United’s Premier League season is slowly drawing to a conclusion, which a lot of fans may now be happy about. It hasn’t exactly been plain sailing for Erik ten Hag in the 23/24 campaign. He’s had injuries galore, a plethora of external squad issues and, ultimately, suffered some embarrassing defeats.

Now, the only thing left for the Red Devils to decipher – where will they finish? They could still obtain either Europa League, Europa Conference, or in fact, nothing at all.

It all depends on the remaining four fixtures. First up, a trip to Selhurst Park – where fans may notice something a little different regarding the referee’s attire.

What the referee is wearing for Man Utd vs Crystal Palace

The Premier League has announced that the referee will wear a camera during Manchester United’s clash with Crystal Palace on Monday night.

It’s a Premier League first, with the official wearing a camera to shoot footage for a programme about match officials, made by Premier League Productions.

The programme will be about officiating in the English top flight and will look to give viewers further insight into the demand for refereeing in the biggest league in world football.

The statement issued by the Premier League said that “the technology being used comprises a head-mounted device which is integrated into the usual communications system” used by match officials.

The decision for such filming to take place has been approved by all bodies, including Manchester United, Crystal Palace, The International Football Association Board [IFAB], Professional Game Match Officials Limited [PGMOL] and the Premier League.

Who is the referee for Manchester United vs Crystal Palace?

The referee for Manchester United vs Crystal Palace is Jarred Gillett. He’ll be sporting the camera on Monday.

Manchester United don’t exactly have fond recent memories of Gillett. He took charge of the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea, where the Red Devils conceded two penalties.
