Arsenal benefit from failed Saudi Arabia transfer swoop as Edu masterplan for future takes shape

Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with Gabriel Magalhaes over a new contract, almost a year on from Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad's interest in the defender

Arsenal are reportedly planning to offer Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes a new contract, following interest from Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad last year. Despite the financial allure of a move to Saudi Arabia, Gabriel chose to remain at the Emirates Stadium where he has formed a formidable partnership with William Saliba.

Reports suggest that the President of the Saudi Federation even held a meeting with Gabriel, but the defender remained committed to Mikel Arteta's side. The centre-back signed a long-term contract extension in late 2022, but according to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are keen to negotiate fresh terms to ward off potential suitors.

It has been reported by the Express that talks are still in their early stages as the club's primary focus remains on the Premier League title race. However, Arsenal are expected to intensify negotiations during the summer transfer window.

Sporting director Edu Gaspar has already helped the Gunners plan for the future. Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Ben White, Martin Odegaard and Saliba have all committed their futures to Arsenal in recent months. Given Arsenal's improvement under Arteta since his appointment in 2019, the club are heading in a positive direction.

In terms of Gabriel, Arsenal took a gamble on the Brazilian after just one season of regular Ligue 1 football with Lille. The move has since reaped significant rewards, with the 26-year-old now considered one of the Premier League's top defenders.

Despite initial concerns over his future, Gabriel has featured in 30 of Arsenal's 34 league matches this season, making two additional appearances off the bench. His commanding presence at the back could be crucial in the final four games of the campaign.

The Gunners currently sit top of the Premier League table, one place above reigning champions Manchester City. Gabriel and his teammates will be determined to make amends for last season's disappointing collapse, which saw City overtake them and secure a third consecutive title.
