Rio Ferdinand does not agree with what happened to Manchester City at the weekend.

On Saturday, Pep Guardiola fielded a full-strength team against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final.

The message from Guardiola to his players seemed loud and clear.

It was a chance for several of the same players who started against Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final to redeem themselves.

Luckily from a Manchester City perspective, they did.

Even though it was quite an ugly win, they eventually fought to beat Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Ferdinand says something “out of order” happened to City at the weekend

After the contest, Pep Guardiola was amazed by how brilliant Rodri and Kyle Walker were.

The £378,846-a-week man marvelled at how the pair managed to put their bodies on the line to help City get the win, despite playing the entirety of the game against Real Madrid, which was an impressive sight.

However, the same can be said about several other Sky Blues players.

Jermaine Jenas hailed Kevin De Bruyne for his work rate, pointing out how many tackles he made against the Blues.

Naturally, the Manchester City players must have been on a mission to make a statement.

It is fair to say that despite being battered and bruised, they did.

On FIVE’s official YouTube channel, however, Rio Ferdinand did feel it was bizarre that the game between Manchester City and Chelsea took place on Saturday.

“It was out of order”, he said.

“I don’t understand why they didn’t just play on Sunday, that was out of order, I think.”

Pep Guardiola questioned why Manchester City could not just play on Sunday after the game, much like Rio Ferdinand.

Rio Ferdinand is right

Instead of focusing on how brilliant a squad Manchester City have that would allow them to rotate players, Rio Ferdinand has focused on the crux of the matter.

Manchester United and Coventry City could simply have played on Saturday, with City and Chelsea facing each other on Sunday, which is what Ferdinand seems to wonder as well.

Often, such conversations deviate from the biggest concern; a danger of overburdening players and instead veer into conversations about a team’s squad depth or the XI a manager picks for the game.

However, it is better to have the perspective Rio Ferdinand, who seemingly has a better understanding of the lack of gap between games due to being a former player at the highest level.
