Liverpool transfer news as Arne Slot 'eyes reunion with $59m ace' amid Man Utd and Arsenal battle

Liverpool transfer news as Arne Slot could move for one of his former players. A Serie A midfielder has also emerged as a possible target but there is competition.

It is three months since Jürgen Klopp announced his intentions to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, and the Reds are now closing in on a deal for his replacement. Arne Slot is set to take over at Anfield and faces the enviable task of replacing the iconic German.

Slot arrives with a decent reputation, having won the Eredivisie last term and will inherit a talented Liverpool squad. It remains to be seen where he will look to strengthen, with the Dutchman set to link up with new sporting director Richard Hughes this summer.

Decisions will have to be made over the futures of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, with both players out of contract in a year's time. Salah's touchline bust-up with Klopp at West Ham on Saturday only further fueled speculation that he could move on this summer.

But The Athletic reports that Liverpool has no plans to let Salah go at the end of the season, despite being braced for fresh interest from Saudi Pro League clubs after last summer's failed attempts.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the other transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today, including a potential reunion for Slot with a former player amid a battle with Manchester United and Arsenal for a Serie A ace.

Teun Koopmeiners (Atalanta)

Liverpool is reportedly set to reignite its interest in midfielder Teun Koopmeiners this summer. The Dutch international was part of the Atalanta side that dumped Liverpool out of the Europa League this season.

Koopmeiners has scored 14 times in all competitions this season and has previously attracted interest from Liverpool, as well as Juventus. He also told De Telegraaf last month of his desire to play in the Premier League, with Atalanta likely to demand around $59m (£47m/€55m) for his services.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Liverpool is looking to pip Juventus to the signature of Koopmeiners as it seeks further reinforcements, despite last summer's midfield overhaul.

Koopmeiners previously worked with incoming boss Arne Slot at AZ Alkmaar and even captained the side before moving to Italy. The report states the pair could now reunite at Anfield this summer.

Liverpool.com says: There is no doubt that Klopp is leaving a talented squad behind but Slot may well want to add his own stamp to it. Koopmeiners showed his undoubted ability against the Reds in the Europa League and is a player that Slot knows well. If he is seeking midfield additions, the Dutchman is likely to be top of his wish list.

Nicolo Barella (Inter Milan)

Another Serie A midfielder tipped to be on Liverpool's radar this summer is Inter Milan ace Nicolo Barella. The Italy international has played a key role in Inter's title success this season but there remain financial issues at the club.

According to Fichajes, the Serie A giants may have to cash in on one of its prized assets and that could open the door for clubs to move for Barella. It is claimed that Liverpool was interested in the 27-year-old a year ago but Inter were reluctant to lose him.

That situation may change though at the end of the season, with Manchester United and Arsenal both also said to be monitoring the situation. It is reported that Inter will also look to move on striker Marcus Thuram and defender Denzel Dumfries, among others.

Liverpool.com says: Barella has been one of the standout midfielders across Europe in recent years and one club will be getting a real talent, if he is to leave Inter. Despite its financial issues, you would expect the Serie A champions to want to keep him. That said, Liverpool should put itself right in the mix if it feels it has a chance of striking a deal.
