Leeds Utd flop gets Man Utd fans talking with post hinting he will sign for club

The Jesse Marsch signing was already unpopular with sections of the fanbase for his failure to stop the team suffering relegation down to the Championship last term

Weston McKennie's first Premier League spell didn't go to plan

It's probably safe to say if you're already unpopular with Leeds United fans then sharing a photo of yourself in a Manchester United shirt won't help, and that's exactly how Weston McKennie may have dented his reputation further with his old club.

American international midfielder McKennie joined Leeds on loan in January in an effort to save the Whites from relegation. However, Jesse Marsch, the manager who brought him to Elland Road, was sacked just a week later.

McKennie continued to earn minutes under Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce but couldn't help keep the team afloat. He is now back at parent club Juventus, with plenty of Leeds fans at worth ambivalent about him not sticking around.

And so, when the photo on his official Facebook page showed him in a Manchester United shirt along with the caption "I'm here", some were baffled. It's also why the first response of a handful of fans wasn't to anticipate a move to Old Trafford, but rather to consider it another mistake from a player who failed to live up to the hype in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old eventually changed his profile photo back to one of him in a Juventus shirt. "My account was hacked. Forza Juventus!" he wrote in the comments section.

Despite his struggles at Elland Road, some fans appeared to welcome the prospect of a move to Manchester. "Maybe you have a big dream to join the biggest team in the whole world," wrote one, with another saying: "Please come to Man United the theatre of dreams".

Juve supporters, meanwhile, had some fun after the brief scare. "Fastest loan in football history," joked one, with another saying "Welcome back Wes we missed you for a while".

McKennie might have struggled at Leeds, but a return to the Premier League isn't as preposterous as it sounds despite the apparent hack. He has more Serie A assists than any other Juventus player this season, helping Juve close in on a return to the top four in Italy.

In April, the former Schalke man told ESPN how moving to Serie A helped him "grow in more of a tactical and positional standpoint". While he's been able to play himself into the good books of manager Max Allegri after a tough start in Turin, questions do still remain over his longer-term future at Juve.

According to Calciomercato (via Football Italia), Juve remain in talks with McKennie's people over a new contract but have yet to agree new terms. With his current deal expiring in 2025, the Bianconeri could yet cash in over the summer.

McKennie was actually linked with United in January 2023 after impressing at the World Cup, only for the club to instead sign Marcel Sabitzer on loan. After his form with Leeds, though, the reaction to the prospect of an Old Trafford switch was very different to how it might have been over a year ago.
