Former Manchester United talent Timothy Fosu-Mensah will not get a Bundesliga winners’ medal despite Bayer Leverkusen’s emphatic triumph.
Leverkusen clinched their first ever German top flight title on Sunday with a 5-0 demolition of Werder Bremen. Victor Boniface’s penalty opened the scoring before Granit Xhaka and a Florian Wirtz hat-trick sealed Xabi Alonso his first major title as a manager.
Wild scenes erupted at the BayArena as thousands of fans spilled onto the pitch and red smoke filled the air. Seen enjoying the title celebrations was Fosu-Mensah, 26, who joined the club in 2021 from United.

The defender, who made 30 senior Red Devils appearances from 2016 to 2020, posted a clip on Instagram of him standing next to Wirtz, who was holding aloft the Bundesliga trophy as the team was serenaded by their jubilant supporters.
He was also snapped celebrating the occasion with a beer - though he will not qualify for an actual medal himself. That is due to the Dutchman not playing a single minute of league football this season.
As a result of a knee injury and the emergence of Jeremie Frimpong at right wing-back, Fosu-Mensah has been included in just seven of Alonso’s matchday squads, remaining an unused substitute on each occasion.
Only players who have featured in five or more matches are eligible to take home a winners’ medal in Germany. And so the celebrations will no doubt feel bittersweet to the player, who joined United’s academy from Ajax as a teenager in 2014.
He had enjoyed greater involvement up until this season, playing 11 league matches in 2022/23 and four more across all competitions. But Alonso will not care, having spectacularly broken Leverkusen’s historic duck.
He did so in style, going unbeaten in 29 league matches thus far and sitting 16 points ahead of decade-long champions Bayern Munich.
‘Neverkusen’ have the opportunity to silence those who taunted them over the years by clinching a historic Treble, with DFB-Pokal and Europa League winners’ medals still a possibility.
