Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has shown the extent of his injuries following a challenge by AFC Bournemouth midfielder Ryan Christie.

In the opening stages of the game, Saka was left needing treatment as he was caught high on the leg by Christie. Referee David Coote gave the free kick but no further action was taken.

This decision infuriated Saka, who argued his case to the fourth official as he awaited to be reintroduced to proceedings. Football.london understands the challenge was reviewed by VAR and dismissed after the tackle was considered reckless and not dangerous.

If the tackle had been considered dangerous, the officials at Stockley Park could have instructed Coote to go to his monitor to review the footage and potentially award a red card. However, VAR's powers are limited and they are not able to instruct referees to award yellow cards for tackles which have been unpunished by the officials at the stadium.

Under FA guidelines, a 'reckless' challenge is worthy of just a yellow card and not a red. Fortunately, Saka was able to continue after the tackle and scored the Gunners' opener as he converted a penalty on the stroke of half time after Kai Havertz was brought down in the area by visiting goalkeeper Mark Travers.

The decision not to send off Christie does not appear to have harmed Arsenal's chances of winning either as Leandro Trossard doubled the host's advantage with 20 minutes remaining. However, it did not stop Saka from showcasing the extent of the injury he received following Christie's tackle.
