Manchester United linked with £43m striker again after he rejected 2022 transfer

Manchester United need a host of signings in the first transfer window under Ineos, but a new striker will surely be a top priority.

After a long wait for a goal, Rasmus Hojlund has shown real potential as the leader of United’s attack.

The Dane is still raw and needs to be developed, but we have seen encouraging signs from him this season.

Hojlund certainly needs help in attack though and United face a similar conundrum to last summer.

Do United go and sign an experienced striker, somebody like Brentford’s Ivan Toney, or do United add another young talent in attack?

That’s a tough call but whilst links to Toney persist, another young hitman is now being linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.

Manchester United back in for Benjamin Sesko

The London Evening Standard claim that United are interested in snapping up RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko this summer.

MORE UNITED STORIES

It’s noted that Arsenal and Chelsea are interested too but United may now hope to win the race.

The report notes that Sesko’s representatives have actually visited Old Trafford as guests this season – but they have done the same at Chelsea.

RB Leipzig are understood to be ‘sounding out replacements’ for Sesko given the release clause in his contract.

Sesko can leave RB Leipzig for €50million (£43million) this summer and United may well be tempted to activate that clause.

The Slovenian hasn’t been a regular starter for RB Leipzig this season, starting 13 Bundesliga games and coming off the bench in another 13.

Sesko has bagged nine goals and two assists in that time though, continuing to show his outstanding potential.

What has Sesko said about United?

Sesko’s name will be very familiar to United fans having been targeted in the past.

United wanted Sesko from Red Bull Salzburg in 2022 but he instead joined partner club RB Leipzig, agreeing to join in 2023.

That cost RB Leipzig just £20million, so they could earn a healthy profit if that release clause is activated.

Sesko was asked about not joining United in September and suggested that the ‘similar style of football’ was key to his decision.

United haven’t forgotten about Sesko and could make another attempt this summer, but that style of play factor is worth considering again.

It’s unclear who will even be United boss next season, never mind what style of play will be on offer at Old Trafford.

Sesko has turned down United once having been unsure about the style of play and if United’s house isn’t in order, it may be a similar story again.
