Here are three players Sunderland could sign this summer to finally fill the void left by Amad Diallo.

Sunderland are just weeks away from the end of a disastrous 2023/24 season.

The Black Cats have suffered 20 defeats in the Championship this term and have certainly felt the effects of a number of key players leaving.

The likes of Danny Batth, Alex Pritchard and Lynden Gooch have all left the Stadium of Light after becoming regulars in the starting line-up last season.

Meanwhile, Amad Diallo‘s absence has been glaringly obvious, with the Ivorian returning to Manchester United last summer.

Amad netted 14 goals and provided three assists while on loan on Wearside, while Sunderland failed in their attempts to sign him on another loan deal in January.

While the midfielder has struggled to earn himself some minutes for the Red Devils, Sunderland have really struggled to create chances.

The Championship club did sign Jobe Bellingham and Bradley Dack last summer, but they are both very different players from Amad and have been unable to fill the creative void that he has left.

Sunderland are going to need to finally find their Amad replacement now, if they are to give themselves a shot at promotion.

Here are three players who could replace Amad…

Morgan Whittaker

Morgan Whittaker’s versatility across the front four makes him the perfect replacement for both Amad Diallo and Jack Clarke.

Primarily a winger, the 23-year-old has played as an attacking midfielder on many occasions this season, most notably netting a hat-trick in a 6-2 win over Norwich in September.

Whittaker has 20 goals in all competitions this season and could be on his way out of Plymouth, with the club still battling relegation.

Kwame Poku

Sunderland were already linked with a move for Kwame Poku ahead of the January transfer window, with Ipswich also interested.

The 22-year-old is able to play on either side of the striker or just behind them.

He has scored eleven goals and provided seven assists in League One, while he will enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer.

Poku could look to make the leap up to the Championship if Peterborough United fail to win promotion themselves.

Ethan Nwaneri

Probably the most promising of the three, but also the least experienced, is Ethan Nwaneri.

The 17-year-old came up through Arsenal’s academy and became the youngest player to ever appear in the Premier League last season.

Nwaneri signed his first professional contract with the Gunners last month and is extremely highly-rated at the club, with Manchester City and Chelsea attempting to sign him last summer.

The attacking midfielder has scored 17 goals and provided three assists in all youth competitions this campaign, earning himself a cameo in the 6-0 win over West Ham earlier this year.
