In her newly released book, Undefeated: Changing the Rules and Winning On My Own Terms, Shaunie Henderson, the ex-wife of basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, opens up about her relationship with him and reflects on her feelings towards their marriage.
An excerpt from her book is currently circulating online and not the NBA legend is reacting. Now, in the book, Henderson candidly shares her thoughts on whether she ever truly loved Shaq. She reveals that, upon reflection, she questions whether her love for him was genuine or if she was more infatuated with the idea of being married to a successful and famous athlete. She writes, “I don’t know that I was ever really in love with the man, but I was in love with the idea of being married to the man I had a family with,” Henderson says in her book, as reported by Essence. “I was in love with the idea of building a life together. I truly did enjoy spending time with him. [NBA] road trips allowed me to be with my husband and experience the NBA life for a little while.”
While it’s unclear if Shaq has read her book yet the former athlete caught wind of that one part. He took to Instagram this Wednesday and said, “I understand, I wouldn’t have been in love with me either.” He added, “wishing you all of the best… all love Shaq.”
Shaq has also been open and honest about his regrets and mistakes during their marriage. Infidelity was a challenge they faced, and Henderson actually comes to his defense in her book
“He was trying to be a world-famous, thirty-something multimillionaire with thousands of women throwing themselves at him, and people in general begging just to be in his presence, while being a husband and a father simultaneously,” Henderson, who has since remarried, explains in her book. “How could anyone possibly know how to do that?”
In the end, both Shaq and Henderson, who share four kids, still have love and great respect for each other.
