Former Spurs midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has revealed he hopes Harry Kane can soon win his first trophy.

Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season is underway but fans are keeping a firm eye on those still away on international duty.

Following Argentina’s 2-0 over Canada, Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso are now one step away from retaining their Copa America crown, while Rodrigo Bentancur will be hoping to spoil the party if his Uruguay side reaches the final.

In the Euros meanwhile, Micky van de Ven will be hoping to deal England a blow as the Netherlands face off against The Three Lions in the semi-finals.

Despite Tottenham not having a single representative in the England Euros squad, Spurs supporters will undoubtedly be hoping one of their former stars can get his hands on the coveted trophy.

When Harry Kane left Spurs to join Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, it was expected the England skipper would rack up several trophies while in Germany – twelve months later however, Kane’s trophy cabinet is still empty.

Rafael van der Vaart, a former Spurs teammate of Kane’s, has recently gone on record to say he hopes the Tottenham record goalscorer can soon end his trophy drought.

Arriving in North London to much fan fair, Van der Vaart joined the Lilywhites from Real Madrid in August 2010.

Joining up with a squad already littered with talent under Harry Redknapp, Van der Vaart would link up with the likes of Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe – to form one of the Premier League’s fiercest frontlines.

A brace against arch-rivals Arsenal in the North London Derby and a 25-yard screamer at Anfield soon transformed the Dutchman into a fan favourite.

The ex-Madrid man would spend another successful year in North London before leaving to join Hamburg following the arrival of new manager Andre Villas-Boas – a decision which Van der Vaart would openly later regret.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Van der Vaart talked about his former teammate Harry Kane and England’s impending Euros semi-final clash with the Netherlands.

“I know him [Harry Kane) because he was 18 years old when I was at Spurs, he trained with us and played some games.

“He is a great guy and great player and if one player deserves to win a title, then it’s Harry Kane.”

The Dutchman also went on to say he hopes Kane can soon win his first trophy, just not the Euros.

“I hope next year with Bayern he is going to win something…but not this summer.”

Kane and his England side are set to face off against Van de Vaart’s native Netherlands this Wednesday evening, with the winner earning themselves a place in the final of Euro 2024 against Spain.
