Sterling starts, Mudryk benched, Palmer switch – Chelsea lineups for Man City FA Cup clash

Our dedicated Chelsea panel discuss and debate the team they would choose for Saturday evening's FA Cup semi-final between the Blues and holders Manchester City

Chelsea face one of the most difficult challenges in world football on Saturday evening as they take on Manchester City at Wembley.

The Blues are looking to win the FA Cup for the ninth time but before that, they must beat the competition's current holders in City. Mauricio Pochettino saw his side put in a dominant and commanding display against Everton earlier in the week as they cruised to a 6-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino will be desperate for his team to build on that on Saturday as they look to get to their second final of the season. Chelsea were so dominant on Monday that the head coach may be tempted to keep the team selection pretty similar, but there could be some changes as our Blues panel discuss below.

Bobby Vincent

Djordje Petrovic starts in goal. No question about that, but who is in front of him is more up for debate. Personally, I think the back-four did well on Monday, albeit against a very poor Everton attack, and I would like to keep it the same for the clash with Man City.

Enzo Fernandez has been training again this week following a minor injury that kept him out of the win on Monday. However, Conor Gallagher and Moises Caicedo looked a formidable partnership in the middle of the pitch against the Toffees and deserve to keep their roles on Saturday.

Mykhailo Mudryk did not have his best game against Everton and it might be time for him to come out of the side with Raheem Sterling set to return. Sterling was brilliant against City when the two teams drew at the Etihad Stadium a couple of months ago, so he could come back in against his former club.

Bobby's lineup: Petrovic; Gusto, Chalobah, Silva, Cucurella; Caicedo, Gallagher; Madueke, Palmer, Sterling; Jackson.

Tom Coley

It seems weird to be making changes to a side that won 6-0 but Everton aren't Manchester City and Chelsea need to adapt to the challenge. Nevertheless, the backline could remain largely the same.

Petrovic keeps his place despite Robert Sanchez playing the previous rounds even after being demoted to second choice. Malo Gusto got a small rest against Everton and will need to be at his best here at both ends of the pitch.

The centre-back spots are tricky. Axel Disasi was great two months ago at the Etihad Stadium but Chalobah and Thiago Silva have been playing together now more often and did just keep a first clean sheet in what feels like years. I'm going with Chalobah but Disasi could be the physical match for Erling Haaland - if he plays.

Silva surely keeps his place even if the danger of being done in behind on a big Wembley pitch remains. Ben Chilwell ideally would be fit to play but his lack of game time in recent weeks means it's Marc Cucurella on the left, though it'd be a surprise not to see Chilwell at some stage.

Fernandez comes back into midfield with two of the attackers from Monday dropping out. Pochettino will need all the bodies he can get centrally to disrupt City, and Fernandez playing frees up Gallagher to hound Rodri for as long as he's on the pitch. Caicedo keeps his place, no surprise there. Ahead of him is where it gets slightly more controversial.

Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson are dead-certs to be involved. Whether that is with the latter coming from the left like he did at the Etihad Stadium or in his now more regular central role will be down to Pochettino. The selection allows for flexibility during the game either way.

Completing the trio is Sterling. He really must play. Not necessarily on form but on logic. The 29-year-old was excellent against his former side in February and ought to have gotten more than his one goal. Cucurella will need help defensively on the left and Mudryk just isn't that reliable figure yet. Sterling is also a better option at retaining the ball, which will be key.

Noni Madueke drops out and it's not to do with his penalty spat. Palmer simply needs to take his right-wing spot - even though he got four playing centrally on Monday. City will be ready with a plan for the 21-year-old, there just isn't room for the more dribbly forwards in the starting XI here.

Tom's lineup: Petrovic; Gusto, Chalobah, Silva, Cucurella, Fernandez, Caicedo, Gallagher; Palmer, Jackson, Sterling.
