Sheffield United fume at officials as finger pointed at Bruno and player told to 'go down'

Newcastle United relegated Sheffield United following a 5-1 win at St James' Park and Blades boss Chris Wilder was not happy that Bruno Guimaraes' goal stood

Chris Wilder has 'stuck up for my football club' after the Sheffield United boss felt decisions went against his relegated side in a 5-1 defeat against Newcastle United.

Sheffield United had to avoid a defeat to keep their survival hopes alive for another week and the Blades took a shock lead through Anel Ahmedhodzic after just five minutes. Although Alexander Isak equalised, lethargic Newcastle were fortunate to go into half-time level after Ben Brereton Diaz, Mason Holgate and Andre Brooks all had chances to put the visitors in front once again at St James' Park.

Newcastle were given a wake-up call by Eddie Howe at the break and the Magpies went on to score four quickfire goals. Newcastle took the lead following Bruno Guimaraes' diving header in the 54th minute, but Wilder felt the Brazil international pushed Brereton Diaz in the build-up.

Alexander Isak made it 3-1 from the spot before Ben Osborn put through his net midway through the second half and substitute Callum Wilson added a fifth late on. There was still time for Jayden Bogle to win a consolation penalty for Sheffield United, following a challenge by Alex Murphy inside the area, but referee Tony Harrington overturned his decision after consulting his pitchside monitor much to Wilder's frustration.

"I am sticking up for my football club," the Sheffield United boss told reporters. "Bruno pushes Ben Brereton Diaz in the lead up to the goal. He just pushes him. Ben should just go down. He should fall down on the floor and possibly get a free-kick.

"Then the penalty at the end gets overturned. I'm scratching my head. The boy gets the ball first, but then comes charging into the back."
