The youthful tactician is not assured of his future at the club after failing to deliver a trophy in an elite Africa club competition.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Rhulani Mokwena had a target of winning the Caf Champions League this season after getting all the support from the club.
However, Masandawana were eliminated in the semi-finals - just like last season, after losing to Esperance. This has cast doubt about the future of the tactician.
Mokwena is happy with what he has achieved and insists he has all the support but didn't rule out the possibility of getting fired.
WHAT MOKWENA SAID
"Does losing my job cross my mind? Yes. It crosses my mind every day; every day, I have to prove myself worthy to be the coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, every single day," Mokwena said in a presser.
"I feel the support of the players, I feel the support of the family that runs this football club, I feel the support of senior management, and that’s important. I feel the support of the staunch Sundowns fans who realise where this club is, as compared to where this club used to be.
"The difficulties that they have gone through with this club, and how much it means to them to continue to win and to be respected on the African continent," he continued.
AND WHAT IS MORE
Mokwena further bragged about helping the Brazilians make a step in continental competitions, "Whereas, in the past, many teams would come here and would think, 'Oh it’s easy to play against Sundowns'.
"I remember Sundowns losing five-nil in a knockout stage of the Champions League. Gone are those days, when teams don’t play against Sundowns whether home or away, and play open. This is something that shows how much we have grown as a team and how big we have become."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The last and only time Sundowns have won the Caf Champions League was in the 2015/16 season under the celebrated South African coach Pitso Mosimane.
In November, Masandawana won the first edition of the African Football League and Mokwena stated Caf Champions League is the next step.
After failing to deliver the Caf Champions League, which the club desperately wants, the management might opt to give Mokwena another chance or bring in an experienced coach to help him win it.
WHAT NEXT?
Downs are set to bag their seventh successive Premier Soccer League crown and hope to bag the Nedbank Cup as well.
The team will also start early preparations for the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup after qualifying from the continent alongside Esperance, Wydad Casablanca, and Al Ahly.
