Ronald Araujo went from hero to zero at home to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Barcelona came into Tuesday's quarter-final clash with a 3-2 lead from the first leg, which was boosted again by Raphinha's early opener in Catalonia. However, the French guests were handed a major lifeline when Uruguayan Araujo saw red in the first half.
Araujo, 25, could have few complaints after hauling down Bradley Barcola on the edge of his own area, just as the French winger was bearing down on goal. But that didn't prevent the centre-back from quarrelling with referee Istvan Kovacs for an extended period of time.
His protests fell on deaf ears as Kovacs repeatedly pointed the defender towards the touchline and out of the fixture. And the official wasn't the only one not buying Araujo's attempt at innocence.
"Why would Araujo do that? So stupid, should’ve just risked it with the 1v1 [with goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen]," wrote one enraged viewer on X. "We’re now down to 10 with 60 [minutes] to go, AND he’s suspended for a potential semi. Worst case scenario, changes everything."
Another spectator commented: "This is a clear red card I don’t know why Araujo stayed on the pitch for so long arguing." And a third remarked: "Araujo thought he's playing in LaLiga."
