Why Chelsea might actually want to finish seventh instead of sixth in the Premier League this season

Reports have claimed that Europa League football could actually be a bit of a nightmare for Chelsea next season.

The Blues have put themselves in a decent position to qualify for Europe next season, something that was always seen as imperative for Mauricio Pochettino to keep his place at the club.

The Argentine has been under pressure pretty much ever since he took over at Stamford Bridge, with reports refusing to go away in 2024 that some chiefs at the club are looking at other figures who could be brought in to replace him.

This perhaps leans in to recent claims that the Europa Conference League is not enough to satisfy the demands from upstairs, with the Europa League being the minimum expectation.

There are obvious financial implications that come from which competition they are playing in if any next season, and it could also impact the calibre of player they are able to add to their ranks.

However, their previous financial exploits could come back to bite them, with The Athletic reporting that the rules that revolve around the total loss allowed comes down.

It goes on to say that the amortisation methods the club have used to spread the extortionate transfer fees they have paid over as many as eight years will not work either, and instead will only go down as being paid over five seasons.

Chelsea need to sell big this summer

It has already been reported that Chelsea will need to sell big this summer in order to balance the books as a result of their prior spending sprees, and could have to part ways with some key players.

Reports have refused to rule out a departure for Conor Gallagher, despite the fact he has been a crucial member of the side for Pochettino this season, and even the club captain for longer periods than not.
