Wayne Rooney lit up the Premier League when he broke into the first team at Everton over 20 years ago.

You could immediately tell that he was really special, and Sir Alex Ferguson jumped in and wrapped up a deal to sign him in 2004.

Rooney became an absolute superstar at Manchester United. He scored 253 goals and provided 143 assists in 559 games for the Red Devils and is an undisputed legend of the club.

MORE MANCHESTER UNITED STORIES

Trent Alexander-Arnold was just five years old when Rooney left Everton and moved to Manchester United. However, the Liverpool man claims he still remembers that move.

In an interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap, he has now shared what he noticed about Rooney back in 2004.

Alexander-Arnold said: “From what I could see it looked like Rooney was a man when he came in it looked like he was a man, he was everything.

“And then [Cristiano] Ronaldo came in and he looked like he was a bit more frustrating, probably a bit more needed to learn and wasn’t the finished article. At what point did those scales change?”

Neville replied: “You’re right, Rooney was almost like a man when he broke in at 2003/04. And when he broke into the England team at 18, he was almost like the best player straight away. He was unbelievable. His decision-making, his power, his strength.

“Ronaldo came and he was scrawny, he hadn’t developed into his body, his decision-making was erratic, he should have crossed it and he’d dribble. He always frustrated the players in the middle because he’d go to cross it and then cut back.

“He was all over the place and I actually lost faith in him because he wasn’t delivering in an attacking sense, but he also wasn’t coming back.

“So it was quite frustrating then it was around 2006 he scored the penalty and knocked us out the World Cup in Germany and all of a sudden his physique and body had changed and that season in 2006, it was just a transformation into this absolute machine. Strong, he scored 35/40 goals.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold could break one of Wayne Rooney’s records

Wayne Rooney is one of the greatest players to ever grace the Premier League.

The Manchester United icon was not just a great goalscorer, but he was a terrific team player as well. He could play in a number of different positions and had the ability to pick out key passes to unlock defences.

Throughout his career at Manchester United, Rooney provided 143 assists, which is a phenomenal return.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is a defender, already has 85 assists to his name, and if he continues to perform at the same rate, he will surely surpass Rooney’s tally.

The Liverpool man’s assists will increase even further if who ever becomes the next Reds manager decides to play him in midfield.
