How Arsenal can avoid naming Benjamin Sesko in Premier League squad and green light more transfers

Arsenal transfer news as Premier League rule gives them yet another reason to sign RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko

If 11 Bundesliga goals in less 1,500 minutes, and just 15 starts isn't enough, then Arsenal have other reasons to try and sign RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko. With a new striker on the list of priorities heading into the summer, the 20-year-old is one of the most exciting names out there.

With four in his last four in Germany and a debut season at Leipzig with 15 goals in all competitions so far, Sesko has risen to the challenge since leaving RB Salzburg just over 12 months ago. Now, with top centre-forwards being in demand across Europe, Arsenal have been given cause for optimism.

His agent, Elvis Basanovic, was recently spotted at the Emirates Stadium. As a representative of Pro Transfer, Basanovic was in the members-only lounge (The VW) during the 5-0 thrashing of Chelsea on Tuesday. The Blues are another side known to be interested in signing him.

It comes with the increasing expectation that Arsenal will look to try and reinforce their frontline under Mikel Arteta after a poor year in front of goal for Gabriel Jesus. Even Kai Havertz's recent form acting as a striker isn't likely to be enough to stop Edu Gaspar from eyeing up fresh options.

Eddie Nketiah could leave in the summer window and Arsenal have been pursuing attacking options for a while now with names including Ivan Toney and Viktor Gyokeres. Sesko could be the cheapest of the lot despite his promise, with reports of a £43million release clause set to become active.

However, another reason to sign Sesko is that he won't count towards the Premier League squad limit of 25 next season either. Due to still only being 20, and rules stating that, "Under-21 players are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad," Arsenal can effectively sign him without using up a slot.

The same was true in January as they looked to try and find affordable additions to the group, but Arsenal, like so many of their rivals, opted not to spend amid FFP uncertainty. The summer affords more leeway though, and despite Sesko turning 21 in a matter of weeks, he'll still be young enough to meet the threshold.

"For the 2024/25 campaign, Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1 January 2003," league regulations confirm. Sesko was born on May 31, 2003. It means that for one year in England he would be an extra player in the squad without having to lose someone else. Even though Arsenal could go through some pretty big changes in the summer anyway, with sales across the board to help compliance with financial restrictions, this would still be an almighty boost.

It would, possibly, open up the space to sign another striker as well as Sesko, if they wanted to add even more experience to their attack. Sesko, as a raw but extremely talented option, could be comparable to Darwin Nunez in terms of his physicality, speed, and ingredients.

He is not necessarily somebody right now that will power a side to the title, but by signing him before he takes up a squad slot, there could be room to get even more business done to balance his youthfulness with experience.
