Neil Jones has now shared the real reason Liverpool decided to hire Arne Slot to replace Jurgen Klopp.

Michael Edwards seemingly explored a number of options, with Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP looking very likely to get the job at one stage.

There was also – of course – strong talk of Xabi Alonso returning to Anfield, before the Spaniard squashed speculation by announcing his decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

Now, the real reason Liverpool settled on Arne Slot has emerged – according to Jones, at least…

Why Liverpool hired Arne Slot

Some fans might roll their eyes at this rumour, but according to Jones – previously Goal’s Liverpool correspondent – Fenway Sports Group (FSG) were attracted by the Dutchman’s ability to work on a budget.

The respected journalist told Caught Offside: “The reason Arne Slot was deemed “the one” for Liverpool over other targets was that he has not had huge sums to spend or players on big wages, but has still managed to stamp his authority with a defined style of play at two different clubs.”

Now, some Liverpool supporters will surely view this as FSG choosing the cheap option, although we don’t see it that way.

FSG are thinking logically

Even those in charge of Europe’s wealthiest clubs, such as Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea and Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, have not benefitted from having hundreds of millions to spend.

For example, the Blues have spent £424.8m on transfer fees in the 2023/24 season, but are only seventh in the Premier League.

Spent Received Net Spend
Chelsea £424.8m £220.1m £204.7m

In regards to Manchester United, Ten Hag has previously spent £85m on Antony and £70m on Casemiro among other expensive signings, only to have the Red Devils sitting eighth and going backwards.

Spent Received Net Spend
Man Utd £167.4m £42.9m £124.5m

Therefore, prioritising a manager who can work effectively on the training ground, mostly with players already at his disposal is – quite rightly – a good place to start for FSG, who will surely back Slot with some signings anyway.
