‘I was Prem star who showed up to match 24 hours early – this is the truth of what happened’

Saido Berahino has opened up on the infamous incident which saw him turn up for a Stoke City match 24 hours early, as he described the club as a "s*** place to work"

Saido Berahino has set the record straight about the time he allegedly rocked up to a Stoke City match 24 hours early.

The ex-England U21 star's stint in the Premier League with Stoke turned into a nightmare after his big-money move from West Brom. He was all set for a switch to Tottenham Hotspur in 2015, but the deal fell through in the final stages. He remained at Hawthorns for another two years, before he joined Stoke for a cool £12million.

But instead of banging in the goals, Berahino was hitting headlines for all the wrong reasons. One of which came from former team-mate Kurt Zouma uploading a picture on social media, insinuating Berahino was at the Bet365 Stadium 24 hours early.

Fast forward over half a decade and Berahino revealed what really happened. In a Q&A on X with his 100,000 plus followers, one fan asked him about the mix-up, reports the Mirror.

Berahino didn't mince his words, saying: "Let's put this to bed. It wasn't true. I had a player appearance that's why I was wearing my tracksuit. And papers still decided to write a stupid story."

Saido Berahino, the former Stoke City striker who's now with AEL Limassol in Cyprus, didn't mince his words about his old stomping ground. He slammed his previous club as a "s*** place to work" when quizzed by a fan on why he didn't soar to greater heights during his time with the Potters.

The 30-year-old forward had a rough patch at Stoke, failing to bag a single goal in the Premier League and only managing a solitary assist across 15 top flight appearances. His luck didn't improve much even after Stoke dropped down to the Championship; he scored just three times and set up another in 23 outings.

Berahino struggled during his time at Stoke City

Berahino waved goodbye to Stoke in the summer of 2019, packing his bags for Belgium where he turned out for Zulte Waregem and Charleroi SC. He also had a stint at Sheffield Wednesday before jetting off to Cyprus for the 2022-23 season.

On the international front, Berahino has donned the Burundi jersey 17 times, netting twice and providing one assist for the East African nation.
