Wayne Rooney has secured a new job as a pundit on The Overlap.

The 38-year-old is set to appear on the YouTube channel alongside former Manchester United team-mates Gary Neville and Roy Keane, as well as Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott and Ian Wright.

In a video on social media, Fabrizio Romano announced the news. He said: "Breaking news in the world football... Here we go! Manchester United, Everton and England legend Wayne Rooney has signed an agreement with The Overlap. The deal is completed and signed.

"Rooney will join his friends and ex-team-mates Gary Neville, Roy Keane and the rest of the team and will be making his debut very soon. Wayne Rooney to The Overlap, here we go!"

Meanwhile, Rooney confirmed the announced later on Tuesday morning. He said: "I'm excited to announce that I will be joining my good mate Gary Neville and the team at The Overlap to appear on the channel across some of their brilliant shows on YouTube and the podcast. I can’t wait to get started - head over and subscribe now!"

Rooney, who appeared as a guest on The Overlap back in March, was sacked as manager of Birmingham earlier this year. He lasted less than three months at Blues, securing just two victories in 15 matches as they went from play-off contenders down to fighting near the bottom of the Championship.

Before managing Birmingham, Rooney had spells at DC United and Derby after retiring from professional football in January 2021. During his playing career, the ex-Manchester United forward scored over 350 goals and won 12 major honours, including the Premier League on five occasions.

After his dismissal from Blues, Rooney has dipped into the punditry world. He worked for ITV during their coverage of United's 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, before appearing on Sky Sports last Wednesday as his former club Everton beat Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

Rooney had been scheduled to make his Match of the Day debut last month, but a back injury suffered on holiday saw him forced to withdraw. He wrote on social media: "Gutted not to be making my debut on the iconic @BBCMOTD show tonight, it’s something I have wanted to do since I was little.

"Unfortunately I have sustained a painful back injury during a holiday with my family but I look forward to being part of the team in the near future. Good luck to @GaryLineker and the guys for tonight's show and see you soon."
