Manchester City are about to enter another season where they’ll be on the hunt to add even more silverware to their cabinet.
Despite not being able to regain the Champions League or FA Cup last season, City did make history by becoming the first side to win four Premier League trophies in a row.
Ahead of the new season, a pundit has shared his thoughts on the future of one key figure at the Manchester club, whose contract is set to expire next year.
Appearing in a recent video shared on the Optus Sport YouTube channel, Michael Bridges had this to say about the possibility of seeing Pep Guardiola leave City and the end of the season once his current deal expires.
He said: “I don’t want to see him leave the Premier League because I absolutely love what he’s all about. He’s changed the whole dynamics of the way people view English football.
“He’s a class act, the experience that he brings, you mentioned losing all them players, I think if anybody can handle the situation, he’s your man.
“I think Alex Ferguson at Man United used to handle that situation impeccably well. When they lost players like David Beckham, what they’re going to do and bring in, well they found replacements for them nd the way he manages the whole squad, nobody’s bigger than the football club.
“I think Pep views that as well, that’s his kind of DNA as well.
“So I do not want to see him go, I want to see him stay in the Premier League as long as possible.
“His contract is up, have Manchester City got enough money to keep him? Yes, they have, of course they have, but I don’t know because the amount of times that he’s won things, the trebles he’s done, he could have quite easily said [bye].
“The guy is a serial winner but he’s a serial motivator as well.
“I think he’d be lost without football, he needs it in his life, he needs to be the manager and if you’re the manager of one of the richest clubs in the world and you know what you can do then why would he want to leave?
“The challenge is the Premier League, can he keep going and performing and doing it?
“I don’t think he would like the challenge anywhere else apart from international management possibly one day.”
During his time at the Etihad Stadium, the 53-year-old has overlooked 473 games in all competitions, winning 350, drawing 57 and losing 66, resulting in multiple domestic and European titles being won.
Last month, the Spaniard, who is picking up a weekly wage of £378k-a-week, said that while he would be open to extending his contract at City, he isn’t likely to spend another eight years at the club.
Taking into account how important he is for the team and the club, we feel that seeing him extend his stay would be a huge positive for everyone at City.
