Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that promising young defender Josh Acheampong will be part of the squad travelling to Kazakhstan for the Europa Conference League match against Astana.
The trip will also feature several other academy talents, as Maresca views it as an opportunity to showcase and develop Chelsea’s next generation.
Speaking ahead of the match, Maresca said: “Yeah, some of them will be here and some of them will fly with us. More or less, we try to manage in the same way we have done before today. We have many young players, 17 players with us, and the rest will be here with us.”
The journey to Astana poses a unique challenge, with an eight-hour flight and harsh weather conditions awaiting the team. Maresca acknowledged the difficulties but emphasized the importance of the match. “Eight hours is not a normal time for a game, you know, but we have to go there, we have to play, try our best, and think also about the next game,” he said.
When asked if fans can expect to see debuts, Maresca hinted at the possibility. “Probably, yes,” he revealed, underscoring the opportunity for youngsters to make their mark on the European stage.
Acheampong’s inclusion in the squad is particularly noteworthy, as contract negotiations with the club remain ongoing. Maresca expressed confidence that a resolution will be reached soon. “He is in the squad, yes, and is probably going to play from the start. For Josh, it is quite clear: The club love Josh, I love Josh, and we are trying to find an agreement with the player. We are close, we are almost there, but we will see,” he added.
Chelsea’s clash with Astana is not just a test of endurance and adaptability but also an opportunity for the club’s young talents to shine under Maresca’s guidance. Fans will be eager to see how the squad rises to the occasion.
